SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

The landmark agreement made during the 21st Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate Change (COP 21) have changed the way governments and industries view climate change. Participating governments are now required to take action and find ways to lessen their countries’ carbon emissions effectively. The conference has brought the issue to the greater public and has increased the shift in people’s consciousness, and subsequently, the demand for low carbon energy sources.

Climate change mitigation is not a new concept at First Gen. In the past years, we have consciously made the effort to develop cleaner sources of energy, despite knowing how challenging this effort is. The conference in Paris and the participation of 198 countries only reaffirms our commitment.

As World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim remarked: “We welcome the historic agreement that has just been reached in Paris. The world has come together to forge a deal that finally reflects the aspiration, and the seriousness, to preserve our planet for future generations. We called for strong ambition, for remarkable partnerships, for mobilization of finance, and for implementation of national climate plans. Paris delivered. Now the job becomes our shared responsibility.”

Sustainability in business is not just about the financial impact, it is about the environmental and social impact as well. It is, to a large extent, why we have prioritized our investments in natural gas, geothermal, and hydro resource platforms because of their affordability to consumers. And we continue to increase our accountability to our stakeholders by balancing the choices we make with financial gains. This is always a challenge and we recognize it isn’t easy if you want to do it right.

Going forward we continue to keep our eye on remaining relevant, effective, pioneering, and smart about the choices we make in moving towards a decarbonizing world. It should be convincingly clear that with increasing concern over climate change and landmark President and Chief Operating Officer agreements such as COP 21, our country and the rest of the world will have to dramatically reduce our dependence on fossil fuels. We certainly agree that it is necessary and believe it is doable.

First Gen continues to care about the world we live in and we will continue to dare to make positive contributions.

We thank you for your continued support.
